Hi All,

The results are in for the first two weeks! I am very excited about everyone’s progress and I hope you are too. There’s still time for another lab to take the lead, so remember to shut your sashes. If you think there is some discrepancy in the data, please email me so that we can figure it out. In addition, there are some labs where sash heights are not measured, which could not be included in the competition. I will be posting our next update the next Thursday!

Info Flyer Correction

Hi everyone,

Apologies for two factual errors about UC San Diego’s energy use, the first was mixed up with a figure from UCSD’s water use and the latter was due to citation of an unreliable resource:

“UCSD spends well over $20M/year on energy (vs. $500K) and I believe that although we use a lot of energy, Cambodia still uses more:

UCSD:              Peak load ~ 40 MWs                 Annual consumption ~ 250 GWh

Cambodia:         Peak load ~ 160 MWs                Annual consumption ~ 783 GWh (based on annual use of 55 kWh/capita and a population of 14.2 million)”

Competition begins January 5th and ends February 6th

Welcome to the Shut the Sash  Competition website for the 2008 Natural Science Building energy saving competition! This competition is sponsored by:

Green Campus Program, Facilities Management, EH&S, and the Biology department.

Who will have the lowest sash height average saving the most energy?

My name is June Reyes and I am fourth year Environmental Systems (EBE) and Political Science Major in my second year in the Green Campus Program. I will be giving you updates on the status of the competition and tips on how you can save energy. Let me know if you have any questions about general sustainability or the competition by commenting below or emailing me at jkreyes@ucsd.edu. If you would like a member of Green Campus to come by your lab to give you more energy saving tips or for a CFL Exchange contact me!

We will be tracking your sash heights via Metasys (a program off site) and will be getting an average of your sash heights. We will also be normalizing the averages because of different numbers of fume hoods and the amount of improvement from previous months. Shut the Sash when possible and Good luck!
